How to Record Video Reviews

Hi, my name's David. Thanks for becoming a reviewer for Child Care Software Store dot com. In this video I'm going to demonstrate just how simple and easy it is to create a fantastic professional-looking video in a matter of minutes.

Let's get started.

The first thing we're going to do is install a couple software programs that we're going to need in order to make our video.

  1. Go to, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "reviewers" link.
  2. Install the DivX and CamStudio software.

We're almost ready to start recording. But before we do, we need to configure CamStudio. Configuring CamStudio is kind of a pain in the butt but we only have to do it once and then whenever you start up CamStudio it should remember your settings.

So, let's go ahead and open up CamStudio by double clicking on the CamStudio icon on your desktop.

  1. Go to "Region" and click on "Fixed Region". Set the width to 320 and the height to 240. Then click OK.
  2. Then go to "Options" and choose "video options".
    • Choose DivX compressor.
    • Set the quality to 60.
    • Uncheck the "Auto Adjust" box.
    • Set Key Frames Every 30 frames.
    • Capture Frames Every 50 milliseconds
    • Set your Playback Rate to 20 frames per second.
  3. Next go to "Options" and select "Record audio from microphone".
  4. Then go to "Audio Options" and choose "Audio options for microphone".
    • Click on "Choose Compressed Format".
    • Choose a format. If you've got an option for some form of MP3, use that. Otherwise we'll just stick with PCM.
  5. Next go to "Options" and select "Enable autopan".
  6. Then go to "Options" > "Program Options" and select "Minimize Program on Start Recording".
  7. Finally go to "Options" and take a look at the "Keyboard Shortcuts". I like to use the F8 key to start recording, the F9 key to stop, and the F10 key to cancel the recording which I use whenever I screw up and don't want to save what I've recorded.

So, now CamStudio is all configured and we're finally ready to start recording. Like I said, you should only have to configure CamStudio once. So, when you want to record videos in the future all you'll have to do is launch CamStudio and hit the F8 key.

So, if you're ready to try your hand at recording a video, let's go ahead and hit the F8 key.

Now we need to set the area we're going to initially start recording. (Don't worry, while recording is in progress the recording area will automatically follow your cursor).

Once you've got your initial recording area where you want it to be, just click your mouse and the software will instantly start recording.

Record your review.

Then, when you're finished, hit the F9 key. The recording will automatically stop and you'll be asked to save the file. Choose a place on your hard drive such as your desktop, then enter the name of the file. A good way to name the file is to use the name of the software you're reviewing.

And that's all she wrote. So, good luck and happy recording!
